Co-funded with the Anthony Nolan Trust, this cord blood ‘bolt on’ project is led by Dr. Bronwen Shaw of the Royal Marsden Hospital.
By studying the immune recovery of patients following cord blood stem cell transplants (also known as bone marrow transplants), and comparing lab-based investigations with data gained in a clinical setting, this project will offer direct translational benefits for patients by reducing complications and improving long-term transplant survival rates.
For 37,000 children and adults with blood cancers worldwide each year, a stem cell transplant is their last hope of life when no other treatment options remain.
