Private Funding supports Stem Cell Research
Stem
Cell research relies on the generosity of private sponsors. For the UK
Stem Cell Foundation’s latest research project private sponsorship was
kindly donated by Mr William Bollinger, co-founder and retired Limited
Partner of Egerton Capital, and his wife, Mrs Judith Bollinger, a
director of ABG Sundal Collier, a Nordic investment bank.
This work, being carried out by Professor John Martin of University College
London, will focus on heart attacks and investigate how use of stem cells
in treatment can help repair the damage done.
Mr Bollinger outlined why he chose to donate to fund stem cell research.
He said: “The use of stem cells has the potential
to dramatically improve the health, productivity and lifespan of thousands
of heart attack sufferers.
“The research on Stem cells does not have a natural sponsor, because
the solution is found within the human body and does not rely on pharmaceutical
products. Having no commercial sponsor, stem cell research must be
funded by the government or by private individuals.
“By funding this effort, we hope to help heart attack sufferers and
also to focus attention on the critical need for individuals to participate
in the funding of medical research. By bringing together dedicated scientists
and individual donors, we hope that serious medical problems, such as heart
attack damage can be solved."
